5 Must-Have Apps BeforeTraveling to Korea

Your first hour in Korea can feel surprisingly easy. The airport signs have English. The train is clean. The convenience store takes your card.

Then you step outside. You search for a restaurant on the map and cannot find the entrance. The bus stop has three buses arriving at once. A restaurant menu is entirely in Korean. You need a taxi at 11 p.m. And suddenly, the apps you normally use at home are not quite enough.

The good news is that traveling independently in Korea becomes much easier once you have the right tools on your phone.

If you are planning a trip to Korea, these are five apps worth downloading before you arrive.

1. NAVER Map — the app you will probably use every day

naver map

If you download only one Korean travel app before your flight, make it NAVER Map.

NAVER Map

Finding places in Korea can work differently from what international travelers are used to. NAVER Map is built around Korea's local transport and place database, making it particularly useful for finding restaurants, cafés, attractions, subway stations, bus stops, and walking routes.

The app provides public transportation routes, real-time arrival information, subway guidance and local place information. It also supports English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese for international users. (NAVER)

One feature becomes especially useful after a few days: saving places.

Before your trip, save your hotel, restaurants, cafés and attractions. Once you arrive, you can open your map and immediately see what is nearby instead of searching from scratch every morning.

Best for: Navigation, public transportation, restaurants, cafés and finding places nearby.

Hanway tip: Search using the Korean name of a restaurant or attraction if an English search does not immediately show the place.

2. Papago — when the menu suddenly has no English

papago

You sit down in a small restaurant.

There is no English menu.

The owner says something quickly in Korean and points toward the wall.

This is exactly when Papago earns its place on your phone.

NAVER Papago

Papago is NAVER's translation service and is particularly useful when traveling in Korea. It supports text, image and voice translation, which means you can use it for much more than typing sentences into a translator. (Naver Papago)

Take a photo of a Korean menu. Translate a sign.

Speak into your phone when you need to ask a simple question.

It is especially helpful in local restaurants, traditional markets and smaller neighborhoods where English information may be limited. Korea Tourism Organization also recommends Papago as a useful translation tool for international travelers. (VISITKOREA - Imagine Your Korea)

✨Best for: Menus, signs, simple conversations and understanding Korean text.
💡Hanway tip: Keep sentences short when using translation apps. “Is this spicy?” usually works better than explaining your entire dietary history.

3. k.ride — for the moments when you just need a taxi

k.ride

Korea's subway system is excellent, but there will eventually be a moment when public transportation is not the answer.

Maybe it is raining.

Maybe you have luggage.

Maybe dinner ended later than expected.

Or maybe you have already walked 20,000 steps and your enthusiasm for another subway transfer has disappeared.

That is when k.ride becomes useful.

k.ride

k.ride is Kakao Mobility's ride-hailing platform designed for international travelers. The service supports English, Japanese and Chinese, while destination searches and chats can support more than 100 languages. (카카오모빌리티)

That removes one of the more uncomfortable parts of taking a taxi abroad: trying to pronounce an unfamiliar Korean address while the driver waits.

Enter the destination in the app, request your ride, and let the phone handle most of the communication.

Best for: Airport transfers, late nights, rainy days, luggage-heavy travel and places that are awkward to reach by subway.

Hanway tip: Public transportation is usually the better option during rush hour in central Seoul. A taxi is not always faster just because it has four wheels.

4. KorailTalk — when your Korea trip goes beyond Seoul

KorailTalk

Seoul is only the beginning. Busan, Gyeongju, Jeonju and other cities can completely change the character of your Korea trip, and Korea's rail network makes multi-city travel relatively easy.

For that, download KorailTalk.

KORAIL official website

KorailTalk is the official train booking app operated by KORAIL. International travelers can use it to plan and reserve Korean rail journeys, including KTX routes.

As of the Korea Tourism Organization's May 2026 travel guidance, the app supports Korean, English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Thai. (韓国観光公社公式サイト「VISITKOREA」)

If you are traveling during weekends or busy Korean holiday periods, do not assume you can simply arrive at Seoul Station and take the next KTX. Popular trains can fill up.

Best for: KTX tickets and traveling between Korean cities.

Hanway tip: Do not build a Korea itinerary by choosing cities first and transportation second. Check realistic travel times before deciding how many destinations you can comfortably fit into your trip.

5. WOWPASS — make payments and transportation easier

WOWPASS

Korea is an extremely card-friendly country.

That sounds convenient until your international card does not work at the exact moment you need it.

WOWPASS is designed specifically for international visitors to Korea.

WOWPASS

It combines a prepaid payment card with transportation functionality. Its integrated Tmoney function can be used for public transportation, while the WOWPASS balance can be used for card payments at Korean merchants that accept domestic credit or debit cards. The app also lets travelers manage balances and receive payment notifications. (WOWPASS)

That makes it particularly convenient if you do not want to depend entirely on an overseas credit card.

One important detail: the WOWPASS payment balance and Tmoney transportation balance are separate, so make sure your transportation balance has enough money before heading through the subway gate. (WOWPASS)

Best for: Payments, public transportation and managing travel spending in Korea.

Hanway tip: Keep a small amount of Korean won as backup anyway. Korea is highly cashless, but markets and unexpected situations have a habit of appearing exactly when your phone battery reaches 4%.

Download these before you land

You do not need dozens of Korea travel apps. For most first-time visitors, these five cover the situations that matter most:

1️⃣ NAVER Map gets you there.
2️⃣ Papago helps you communicate.
3️⃣ k.ride gets you a taxi.
4️⃣ KorailTalk takes you beyond Seoul.
5️⃣ WOWPASS makes paying and moving around easier.

Download them before your flight, create any accounts you need, and save your first few destinations while you still have comfortable Wi-Fi.

But there is one thing an app cannot decide for you:

Where should you actually go?

Apps can help you travel. Hanway can help you plan the right trip.

Knowing how to get from Seoul to Busan is easy.

Knowing whether Busan belongs in your trip at all is the harder question.

A great Korea itinerary depends on how many days you have, who you are traveling with, what you enjoy, how quickly you like to travel, and whether your perfect day means street food in a local market, hiking in the mountains, shopping in Seongsu, exploring traditional neighborhoods or doing absolutely nothing beside the sea in Jeju.

That is where Hanway comes in. Instead of giving every traveler the same Seoul–Busan–Jeju checklist, Hanway can create a personal Korea travel plan based on your schedule, interests and travel style.

Tell us when you are visiting, how long you have, who you are traveling with and what you want to experience in Korea. We can help turn those details into a route that actually makes sense — from where to stay and what to do to how each day should flow.

Because the best Korea trip is not the itinerary with the most saved places.

It is the one that feels like it was made for you.
