A temple roof framed by red maple leaves. Pale granite peaks rising above golden woodland. Cool mountain air followed by a warm Korean meal. Autumn in Seoraksan brings together some of the most memorable scenery of a fall trip to Korea. While Seoul offers palace gardens and tree-lined streets, this mountain landscape invites you to experience the season on a much larger scale. You can spend the day walking through the lower valleys, visiting a Buddhist temple, or climbing toward a dramatic rocky viewpoint. The key is choosing a route that suits your pace—and leaving enough time to enjoy it.
Why Visit Seoraksan in Autumn?
Located in Gangwon Province in northeastern Korea, Seoraksan National Park is known for its granite formations, forested valleys, and mountain trails. It was also Korea’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In autumn, changing leaves add layers of red, orange, and gold to its rugged scenery.
For international visitors, it makes a rewarding addition to a trip that begins in Seoul. Combine the mountains with a stay near Sokcho or Yangyang, and you can experience mountain landscapes and the East Coast within the same journey.
We recommend allowing at least one overnight stay in the area. An early start becomes easier, and there is less pressure to fit your mountain visit between long transfers.
When Is the Best Time to See Seoraksan’s Fall Foliage?
October is the main month to consider when planning an autumn visit, but the timing depends on the year’s weather and the elevation of your chosen route.
For 2026, the Korea Tourism Organization’s published forecast expects the first autumn foliage on October 3 and peak foliage around October 25. These are forecasts rather than guaranteed viewing dates, so check updated conditions close to your visit.
Rather than planning everything around one “perfect” day, allow some flexibility. Different parts of the mountain change color at different times, and your experience will also depend on visibility, weather, and how comfortably you can explore.
What to Do in Seoraksan: Choose Your Pace
1. Explore Sogongwon and Sinheungsa Temple
For a gentler introduction, begin around Sogongwon and follow the approach toward Sinheungsa Temple.
This part of the park combines mountain views with a cultural stop, making it a good starting point for travelers who prefer shorter walks. Sinheungsa also lies along the route toward Heundeulbawi and Ulsanbawi, so you can decide how much farther to continue according to your interests and energy.
Take your time with the details: leaves against traditional architecture, the changing light on the rocks, and the views that open up between the trees. A satisfying visit does not need to revolve around reaching a summit.
2. Take the Cable Car Toward Gwongeumseong
The Seorak Cable Car offers an alternative to a long uphill hike, bringing visitors toward the Gwongeumseong area for elevated mountain views. Further exploration after arrival involves walking, so choose how far to continue based on the conditions and your comfort.
One important planning detail: tickets are sold on-site for the same day, with no advance reservations. Strong winds or poor weather can suspend operations, so keep another option in your itinerary. A private tour does not remove the need to follow the cable car’s ticketing arrangements.
3. Walk Toward Biseondae for Valley Scenery
If you would like a longer walk without committing to a major summit climb, consider the route toward Biseondae.
The Korea National Park Service lists the Sogongwon-to-Biseondae section as approximately 3 kilometers and 1 hour 20 minutes one way. Allow additional time for the return journey, photographs, and breaks.
We would make this the main walking activity of the day, rather than squeezing it between several other routes. You can enjoy the landscape more fully when you are not watching the clock.
4. Choose Ulsanbawi for a More Demanding Hike
For travelers who enjoy an active mountain day, Ulsanbawi is a striking goal. The route passes Sinheungsa Temple and Heundeulbawi before continuing toward the immense granite formation.
Treat this as a dedicated hike, with suitable footwear, an early start, and enough time to descend comfortably. Discuss the route with your guide in advance, especially if members of your group have different hiking experience.
A Relaxed Two-Day Seoraksan Itinerary
We suggest using the following as a starting point, then adjusting it to your arrival time and preferred walking level.
[Suggested plan]
Day 1: Travel from Seoul to the Sokcho or Yangyang area, enjoy a leisurely meal, and settle into your accommodation
Day 2: Visit Seoraksan early, choose one main walking route or the cable car if operating, then enjoy a late lunch before your onward journey
If your schedule allows a second night, stay longer. You can spend the afternoon resting rather than immediately returning to the road.
For travelers who want to combine autumn scenery with warm-water relaxation, a stay at Seolhaeone in Yangyang is worth considering. Its natural hot spring facilities offer a welcome change of pace after time outdoors; accommodation availability and facility access should be confirmed when planning.
Practical Tips for Your Autumn Visit
Start early and leave room for queues. Seoraksan attracts many visitors during the foliage season. An early arrival can help, but popular facilities may still involve waiting.
Bring layers and shoes with good grip. Choose clothing for your walking route and the day’s mountain forecast, rather than relying on the temperature in Seoul.
Check trail access before setting out. Confirm current conditions and any restrictions with the Korea National Park Service, particularly when planning a longer hike.
Keep the cable car optional. Weather-dependent operations make a flexible itinerary especially useful.
